Ministry of Justice
Government department responsible for courts, probation, prisons, criminal law and sentencing.
National Offender Management Service
Section of the Ministry of Justice responsible for commissioning and delivering adult offender management services in custody and in the community in England and Wales.
Independent body that works with its criminal justice partners to protect the public by risk assessing prisoners to decide whether they can be safely released into the community.
HM Prisons Inspectorate
Provides independent scrutiny of the conditions for and treatment of prisoners and other detainees.
Prisons and Probation Ombudsman (PPO)
Investigates complaints from prisoners, those on probation and those held in immigration removal centres. Also investigates all deaths that occur among prisoners, immigration detainees and the residents of probation hostels (Approved Premises). The PPO cannot take complaints from the families of prisoners.
