We were notified by Beacon on Monday 3 August 2026 of unauthorised access to their systems. On Tuesday 4 August they confirmed that copies of our database were made and possibly downloaded.
Beacon holds any contact information supporters have provided (email address, phone number and address) as well as information about any donations made to PET. It does not store banking or payment card details, however we do scan and save copies of cheque donations to ensure we have an adequate audit trail.
A small number of individuals (fewer than 20) were tagged as “prison learner” or “alumni”.
We have spoken to the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO), and for most of the data the risk is low.
For supporters who were tagged as “prison learner” or “alumni”, there is a risk the people involved may identify that these individuals are or were in prison and could share this information further.
Beacon has implemented immediate measures to secure its systems and prevent any further unauthorised access. They are now conducting an investigation with cyber security specialists to understand exactly what happened. They have reported the incident to the ICO.
PET has paused use of our database while we wait for more information from Beacon. We have informed the ICO and have spoken to the Charity Commission. We have contacted all supporters directly. We will be reviewing our relationship with Beacon.
There is no specific action to take at the moment, however we recommend you remain vigilant.
