At the end of last year, my colleague Clare – PET’s Head of Service Delivery – wrote a blog on the importance of prison staff in supporting distance learners.

Prison staff are crucial to people navigating distance learning successfully in often very challenging environments. To support prison staff with this, PET has created a series of short videos and information cards.

These resources are designed so you can quickly and conveniently grasp the main points in a given area – from supporting learners to make a successful PET application to helping them to complete their course.

The two formats – a video and a card – will give you the option to either watch and listen or, if you prefer, print out and read about the particular topic you are interested in.

You can watch this new series of videos in the prison staff resources area on our website.

To provide all-round learner support, we are encouraging all staff to get involved in providing support. If you’re new to distance learning or to PET, there’s a video to help explain both. There are other short video topics that may catch your eye too, such as:

  • How to prepare learners for distance learning
  • How to support learners to make successful applications
  • How to assist learners with exams and assignments
  • How to support learners to complete distance learning courses

Would it be handy for you to find out how to enter learner data through our Digital Prison Monitoring (DPM)? Watch this space – the video is coming soon!

Our new printable information cards provide more information on the topics covered in the videos. See whether you discover something new to help you support learners!

You can also find other great resources on the prison staff area on our website.

You may have seen the PET Course Prospectus already. We send printed copies to each prison and there is a downloadable online version too.

In the prospectus, you can find an overview of all our distance learning courses, as well as information on how to apply and learners’ support.

We also have the Distance Learning Handbook for Prison and Education Staff which is an essential guide created to support staff who are involved in helping distance learners.

We’ve created free digital courses for learners too. There are seven options available on the VC. These taster courses are for anyone who is interested, especially if they are preparing for distance learning.

Finally, our printable PET short courses are suitable for anyone who wants to learn or brush up on study skills. Check out the four topics available and print them out straight from our website for learners.
