James is a PhD researcher at the University of York, whose work examines the role of leadership and organisational culture in hosting and mitigating the effects of morally injurious events.

He holds a LLM in International Human Rights Law and Practice, and a BSc in Nursing (Mental Health).  Before academia, James served as an officer in the British Army working in mental health, as an operations officer in a medical regiment, and deploying to Afghanistan as the officer-in-charge of the Field Mental Health Team based in Helmand Province.

James is the Head of Policy and Research at WhistleblowersUK, is a member of the Project Steering Committee for a University of Manchester led multi-year project examining suicide and self-harm in prisons, and was previously a trustee at the Shannon Trust.
